Greek Conference 2006!

Six years ago, with the help of scholarship money from Indiana University Greek IV supporters, I attended a conference that would forever impact my life. It was here that I began to see that I could have a personal relationship with Jesus and live in the Greek system. Being at a place with hundreds of Greeks who were facing many of the same questions as me was an eye-opening experience that sticks with me to this day. It was at Greek Conference as a sophomore that I decided that I was going to explore what it meant to follow Jesus in college. Later that semester I would re-commit my life to Christ and to not only believing in Him as my savior, but following him as Lord.

This year, InterVarsity will host the third Greek Conference in Charlotte. Two years ago 10 Carolina students attended, and each came back with a profound vision and sense of calling to Greek ministry.

In addition to valuable teaching, students grew closer to Greeks from other houses at Carolina – relationships that helped encourage students back on campus.

We can trace the success of the ministry over the last 24 months to this experience. Last year 35 students attended Conference, and many lives were changed as a result of the teaching, community and call to follow Christ in a new way. I believe that the Lord will do similar things in the growth of the ministry following Greek Conference this year.

This years Conference is Feb. 17-19, (click here to see the student page)and we hope to take 40 Carolina students. The cost of the weekend is $45, which includes two nights lodging, dinner on Saturday night and weekend of teaching and fellowship. Because of our outreach-oriented Ski Greek retreat this January, money will be even more of an issue for students this year. I truly believe in the vision casting power of this Conference, though, and would like to allow every student to attend, regardless of finances.

Would you consider contributing between $120-$240 of the $3,000 I hope to raise to send a student to Greek Conference? I am confident that this money will be well used for kingdom purposes, as lives WILL be changed throughout the weekend.

If you are willing to partner with us, please e-mail me your intent to pledge to me by Feb. 12th. Checks can be written to “Greek IMPACT @ UNC-CH” (mail to Greek IMPACT c/o David Shepley * 4800 University Dr., 3N * Durham, NC 27707) and will be processed through our Student Activities Funds Office account. If you would like the tax benefit, IVCF has a “Blue Ridge Scholarship” fund that you can contribute to as well, although we lose 8% in overhead from that account. I will contact you in the next couple days to discuss this further, but I ask that you be praying about this opportunity to tangibly serve the students over this critical weekend in their spiritual development and in the growth of Greek IMPACT at UNC-CH.

“Greek Conference has inspired me to strive to build a community in God more then any other part of my journey with God thus far. In our day-in-age with so many people living in the shadow of the “norm”, Greek Conference has the ability to open the eyes of so many lost college students in seeing that God is alive and well in fellow students’ lives and so it’s “ok” to embrace God in their lives. Again, we all find security in community and so Greek Conference invites us Christians to embrace our community in God through our fellow Greek students. Greek Conference truly changed my entire relationship with God and allowed me to bring my revelations back to the campus at Chapel Hill. I look forward to another powerful weekend this spring and pray that all those who feel called to go have the opportunity. Thank you so much again for your consideration.”

... The challenge of both serving as the Director for the Charlotte Greek Conference (2.17-19) AND heading up our local recruiting efforts is becoming evident. Pray for my focus and endurance as I try to do both well.

... Student leader partnership in recruiting for Conference has been difficult. Pray that they would take risks in inviting thier friends to this weekend.

... We are taking the idea of "being fully ALIVE," a step further this semester by tackling what "faith as a way of life" looks like.

... My schedule is packed this semester, as I am discipling 19 men and women and leading three 'team ministry' meetings each week. Pray for my leadership of those students. Also pray that leaders would step up to the challenge to lead their area of ministry focus well.
